SAILING

April 10
Today is Sailing Saturday!  Had a quick bite to eat for breakfast, found a few wetsuits that fit and packed the car and hooked up the catamaran. We drove down to the Lake, walked around the boat house trying to decide on which boat Lisa and I would take for a sail.  We decided on a small Pacer.  I haven’t sailed many small boats, they are much more tippy compared to ‘Ballotin’ weighing 2000lbs.  With this in mind, I was a little scared to go out on this tiny little dinghy.  While I was questioning Sven about things to do and tactics to get the boat up and running, Lisa was doing the same with Arild (Sven’s dad).  Both of them kept reassuring us that we would be fine… “Don’t worry, Lisa knows what she’s doing.” While she’s hearing the same message “Natalie knows what to do, don’t worry!”  We looked at each other and exploded into laughter, we were both worried about sailing in this small Pacer.  Taro, one of Sven’s best friends took his boat out of the boathouse and found a possum dwelling inside.
It was hilarious.  Just before us launching they should have made an announcement “Hey everyone look it's the two crazy Canadians going sailing… come watch this.”  That was the impression we were starting to get.  Off we went.  Launched the boat, sails up, jumping in the boat and Lisa got a little confused she wanted me to sit on the lee side of the boat, instead of the windward side, we were confused and kept asking people on shore what to do.  Obviously they were laughing and just sent us off to go learn for ourselves.  That’s exactly what we did… once we got up to speed I switched sides and we were starting to glide and having loads of fun.  After sailing and doing a few practice runs, we came back to shore just before all the other boats were starting the race.  We didn’t want to cause trouble or collisions.  Went to the beach for a swim in the ocean… it was really COLD, stayed in the water for a little bit.  Came back to the boathouse to watch the races, while everyone was struggling to find wind to finish the race.  Came back to the house at sunset.
